  Adoption Procedures and  Application

Members of GSDR of San Antonio are volunteers and receive no reimbursement of any kind for their work and efforts.  Adoption donations are used strictly for veterinary care for the rescued dogs and for necessary operating expenses.  As rescue volunteers we feel that a reasonable donation is an indication our rescued dogs will receive a high standard of care in their new families for the rest of their lives.

To Adopt A German Shepherd Dog

bullet

Our German Shepherd Dogs live with their own foster family.  We have no one central location.  Your first step towards adopting a German Shepherd Dog is to fill out an application.

bullet

Once we have checked your references, conducted a home visit and approved you to adopt one of our dogs, we will place you in touch with the foster family who has the dog(s) you are interested in.  Because the foster knows the dog best, they will have the final decision.  We have found this process to be most successful in assuring a good fit between the dogs and their permanent home.

bullet

Once your adoption application is approved, the minimum adoption donation we request for dogs fostered by our group is $150.00.  If the particular dog being adopted has incurred more than the donation fee due to medical services, transportation, etc., we ask those who are able to pay more than the $150.00 for donations towards those extra expenses.

Adoption Application
bullet

We accept adoption applications on-line.  Your application will help us determine which of our German Shepherd Dogs is the right dog for you.  One of our rescue volunteers will call after we receive your application to complete the interview process and to discuss any questions you may have.  We also schedule a home visit at a time convenient for you.  Serious problems that would be detrimental to the German Shepherd Dog's health or safety (such as broken fencing, access to poisons, etc.) must be eliminated before an adoption can be finalized.

bullet

Adopters should expect that their new German Shepherd Dog will need some time to adjust to its new family, home and environment.  In the event that an adoption doesn't work out, we will take the dog back.  In fact, we are so committed to our dogs, we require by contract that they be returned to GSDR of San Antonio in the event they cannot - at any time - remain in their new home.  Our interest in our rescue German Shepherd Dogs doesn't end with their adoption.  To us they are family and our help and support is always ongoing for them.
